Introduction to System Migration

Learn how to migrate your hard drives and data to a different ASUSTOR NAS.

1. System Migration

ASUSTOR's built-in system migration mechanism allows you to quickly upgrade from your current NAS model to a newer one by moving your original hard drives to a new NAS system. This function is also extremely useful in the unfortunate event of a system malfunction or failure. You only need to move your hard drives from one system to another without need for transferring data or re-installing the entire system.



1.1 System Migration

Older NAS devices may not receive the latest updates to ADM when support ends. This means that there may be a version mismatch. If using an older NAS as the target NAS for system migration, please ensure that the ADM version of the target NAS is equal to or greater than the ADM version on the source NAS.


Note:

  • Volumes with a cache drive mounted cannot be migrated. SSD caching must be unmounted before performing system migration.
  • The number of drive bays in the target NAS must be equal to or greater than the number of drive bays in the source NAS.
  • When migrating to a new NAS, the first drive bay of the new NAS (counting from the left hand side) must contain a hard drive. The order in which the hard drives sit in the drive bays does not matter and does not have to be the same as in the original system.
  • To migrate an M.2 SSD volume, the target NAS must have at least the same number of M.2 slots as the source NAS. The first M.2 slot of the target NAS must contain a M.2 SSD.

The ADM version of the target NAS is equal to or greater than the ADM version of the source NAS.

  • Power off your NAS.
  • Transfer all of the hard drives from your NAS to the new NAS and power it on.
  • After rebooting, ADM will work properly.
  • Please upgrade all apps on App Central if needed.






If the ADM version of the source NAS is above 4.1, do not attempt to migrate to these models of NAS devices: AS10, AS50, AS51, AS70, AS-20, AS-30 and AS-60.

If the ADM version of the source NAS is above 4.0, do not attempt to migrate to these models of NAS devices: AS-20, AS-30 and AS-60.

  • Remove all the hard drives of the target NAS, connect it to the Internet, and turn it on.
  • When the initialization page appears, insert the hard drives of the source NAS.


  • Please wait for the hard drives to come online, and the following screen will appear.
  • Click Next. Reload the page if it does not appear.
    • If the following screen does not appear, please ensure that the ADM version of the target NAS should already be equal to or greater than that of the source NAS. Do not initialize the NAS. Press and hold the power for 1.5 seconds to shut down the NAS, ignore the following steps, and click here to learn more about system migration.


  • Please click ASUSTOR Live update and then click Next. Do not initialize your NAS. Initializing will delete all data on hard drives.


  • Your NAS will restart to complete the update.


  • After rebooting, ADM will work properly.
  • Please upgrade all apps on App Central if needed.


1.2 Additional notes

  • If you are using EZ-Connect, you must re-enable it after system migration.
  • In order to prevent accidental data loss, we strongly recommend that you first back up the data on your NAS before migrating your system.
  • The Btrfs hard drives cannot migrate to the AS10, AS-20, AS-30, AS-60, AS11, AS33 series.
  • The maximum single volume capacity of 32-bit NAS devices is 16TB. This means that the AS-20, AS-30 and AS10 series cannot create volumes with a total size larger than 16 TB. While volumes migrated from these models will work properly in newer NAS models, the capacity of the volume created on a 32-bit NAS will still be limited to 16 TB. To use the maximum possible volume size on a newer NAS device, ASUSTOR recommends to transfer all data to a separate storage device and rebuild the volume on the newer NAS.
  • If the Volume capacity of the source NAS is greater than 16TB, do not attempt to migrate to these models of NAS devices: AS10, AS-20 and AS-30.
